Venue:Tavistock Centre, London
Date:02/05/2014
Duration:1 day
Extra Info:How can we best respond to a young person who self harms?

Is self harm the same as a suicide attempt?

How can we bear to see and treat young people who mutilate their own skin?

Are eating disorders a form of self harm?

How can self harm be seen as an attempt to stay alive?

This multi-disciplinary event explores the meaning, communicative function and impact of self-harm in young people. It will describe how self-harm in this vulnerable population can be seen as a language of the body. It is designed for anyone who works with young people that self-harm, including nurses, residential care staff, medical practitioners, psychotherapists, social workers, other clinicians and family members to understand its causes, meaning and treatment and to be able to bear the often painful and disturbing impact it has on them.
