Adult Learning in Groups

In this era of lifelong learning, more adults are participating in learning in post-compulsory, further and higher education. There is also a need to reach out to early school leavers and non-traditional students, who may resist conventional education methodologies. Many adult educators want to develop their own philosophy and extend their range of teaching and learning methods, particularly that of small group work. "Adult Learning in Groups" is designed as an educational tool as well as a resource. It aspires to enable practitioners to become reflexive in their work, for their own professional development and to transfer to their students and learners. The goal of this book is to provide a comprehensive resource for educators and trainee educators who work with adults in groups.This book provides a critical overview of adult learning groups, drawing together the theoretical underpinnings that have emerged in the field, over the past twenty years, or so. It evaluates theories and perspectives in the field, as well as related fields which have been influential in developmental work with adults. It discusses how theory is derived from practice and experience, reflecting the changes society in general. It also serves as a handbook for practitioners and leaders working with learning groups, in adult education, community education, training, further education and higher education. In addition, trainee educators can use it as a text, to expose them to a wide range of perspectives and from which they can develop their practice in the field.
