Between Two Cultures describes extensive work that EACH has done particularly in developing good practice on effective counselling to reach black and minority ethnic groups. It will hopefully stimulate debate not only within culturally targeted services but also within mainstream mental health and substance misuse services. This publication is born out of the work of EACH, an innovation in the provision of counselling for Asian people with an alcohol or a mental health problem that has been running throughout the 1990s and which has now seen and helped over 2,000 people. Ten years of providing hands on, crisis driven and ever expanding service led us to the view that it was now timely to stand back and reflect on the factors that shape the services that EACH provides. What is different about EACH? How has it been able to make a positive and effective intervention in people's lives? And how can the specific needs of Asian and other minority ethnic people be addressed in counselling? This book begins to answer these questions, drawing on the work of EACH as well as other projects. It will help those interested in exploring different understandings of what it is to have a mental health or addiction problem and addressing these in different cultural contexts.
