Changes in the nuclear and extended family, examples of impulse dyscontrol The impulse-control disorders (ICDs) have burst onto the scene in psychiatry, as well as in popular culture, in recent years. In psychiatry, this may be due to an ascertainment bias, because clinicians and researchers are doing a better job screening for and diagnosing these conditions and new types of ICDs have been proposed. The media is also intrigued by what they view as bad behaviour, especially among celebrities in the public eye. However, changes in our society and technological developments may also have contributed to the importance of ICDs. Moral issues have been of prime concern in recent presidential elections in the United States. Changes in the nuclear and extended family, examples of impulse dyscontrol in the popular media, and the development of the Internet may have all contributed to increases in impulsive behaviour. This clinical manual provides cutting-edge, concise, and practical information about the ICDs for use by researchers, clinicians, family members, and individuals with these disorders.
