Up to one in ten children may have a clinically significant psychiatric disorder. This book is a comprehensive update on the field of psychiatric disorders in children and young people. Conditions considered include: attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, anorexia, depression, autism and fabricated illness.

Some chapters were originally published in the College's journal Advances in Psychiatric Treatment and have now been updated - in line with the themes of continuity into adult life, the influence of findings from neuroscience, integration of biological and social processes and how research and evidence can inform practice. Current clinical work is placed in a social and historical context and the book demonstrates that the understanding of childhood psychiatric disorders, their origins and their treatments is improving.

There are also several new chapters that have been specially commissioned, including ones on anxiety, disorders in younger children and Tourette syndrome. All the papers have been written by experts in childhood mental disorders. The book is intended for child and adolescent mental health professionals, but it will also be useful for other practitioners, such as paediatricians, general psychiatrists and psychologists.
