Holism and Evolution was written shortly after Smuts defeat by Hertzog in 1924. the book was a profound influence on Frederick Perls, a founder of Gestalt therapy, who read it when he first went to South Africa in 1934. Much of the thinking seminal to Gestalt therapy theory is found in this book.
