This publication provides a review of academic and professional literature on the family, with particular reference to gender, social inequalities and ethnicity. Violence and abuse occur regularly and sometimes routinely within families of all different kinds. The book analyzes the origins and effects of violence, abuse and inequality, from a structural and social constructionist perspective. Issues such as marital rape, female mutilation and children who murder are scutinized alongside corresponding social policy and legislation. Contributors illustrate the different forms of power relations that exist and how they operate at both institutional, societal, and individual levels. The text provides a perspective on family policy and its cross curricular approach should be welcomed by students and researchers on the growing number of family studies courses.
