Psychosis in Childhood and Adolescence

Psychosis in Childhood will provide an in-depth examination of the nature of psychosis in children and adolescents for clinical psychologists, psychiatrists, and other mental health professionals who work with this population. Chapters will summarize current knowledge about youth who are at risk for developing psychosis and those experiencing different phases of a psychotic disorder. Integrative therapeutic approaches will be stressed for children with early-onset schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and depression with psychosis, as well as for those who have posttraumatic stress disorders, developmental disorders, and eating disorders with psychotic features. Scientific findings about transient psychotic episodes and chronic psychotic disorders will be summarized, along with case illustrations in research-based frameworks for prevention and comprehensive, combined treatment. Treatment approaches discussed include combined psychotherapy and pharmacological treatments, cognitive behavior therapy, psychodynamic psychotherapy, and play therapy.
