Recent decades have seen a decline in the emphasis on sexuality in psychoanalytic theory, whilst clinical psychology has become more involved in sexual health issues. Sexuality remains at the core of human experience and where there are psychological and psychotherapeutic treatments, there will be sexual issues to be addressed. Sex, Mind, and Emotion is a collection of predominantly clinical papers, exploring innovative work in the field. The central tenet of the book is that sexual behaviour cannot be divorced from the emotional context in which it occurs or the meaning of that behaviour to the individual and therefore no chapter is about sex without also addressing mind and emotion.
The book uses a fusion of psychoanalytic, systemic and cognitive theories in conjunction with public service practice. It deals with important and relevant topics such as the treatment of sex offenders; the compulsive use of internet pornography; the psychosexual development of adolescents growing up with HIV; the psychodynamics of unsafe sex; refugees and sexuality; services for people with gender dysphoria; psychological treatment for survivors of rape and sexual assault; and loss of sexual interest.
Reviews and Endorsements
'Sex, Mind, and Emotion firmly establishes the contemporary clinical relevance of a psychoanalytic perspective on all aspects of human sex and sexuality. [...] It does this in a non-tribalistic way and still manages to achieve a synthesis of diverse theoretical perspectives on the clinical problems linked with human sexuality [...]. It relocates sex and sexual behaviour squarely within their psychosocial, developmental and - most importantly - affective contexts. In sum, its clinical relevance is arguably so broad that no mental health clinician should be without a copy.'
- Professor Phil Richardson, Tavistock and Portman NHS Trust, University of Essex
'Anyone tired of mechanistic, superficial approaches to sexual dysfunction, or of psychotherapeutic methods that disregard human sexuality entirely, will find the antidote in this book. It restores human sexuality to its appropriate place, demonstrating again and again the interrelatedness of human sexuality, emotions and cognition. Although they differ in the extent to which they address it, or even realise it, all psychological therapists are working in the field of human sexuality. They will find this excellent book to be a superb resource.'
- Professor Glenys Parry, University of Sheffield School of Health & Related Research
