Duration | : | 2 hours |
Extra Info | : | In the 1880s Paris was moving towards the 'fin de siècle', the end of the century. There were new scientific ideas and the first inklings of psychoanalysis. These were countered by a resurgent interest in the practice of magic, whilst in the arts the Symbolists were exploring the strangeness of dream and the imagination. In the Salpêtrière Hospital, hundreds of female patients were suffering from the curious malady of 'hysteria'. Many of these treated by hypnosis under the regime of the celebrated and charismatic Professor J-M. Charcot. William Rose’s new novel, The Strange Case of Madeleine Seguin charts the fictional case history of one such patient. In this talk William Rose (the pen name for psychotherapist Lindsay Wells) explores the cultural background to the novel, and takes us on a fascinating journey through nascent psychoanalytic thought in Paris, Symbolist art, the Church, and the Occult. The event will be held at Karnac Books, 118 Finchley Road, London, NW3 5HT. If you are coming by tube, our shop is opposite Finchley Road station, which is on the Metropolitan and Jubilee lines. Please click here for more details about how to find us. The event will start at 7pm. Doors open at 6.30pm.
