| Extra Info | : | Annual Conference of the Association for Psychosocial Studies (APS) Crisis has become a key term for understanding the affective experience and socio-political dynamics of our contemporary psychosocial landscape. We are living through multiple interrelated crises – including increased financial instability, the rise of the far-Right, crises in higher education, brutal conflicts occurring in many parts of the world, and a planet facing ecological collapse. Indeed, the twenty-first century seems to be marked by a permanent polycrisis that has shattered the basis of modernity and the assumptions that support it. The difficulty with extracting a critique from crisis is that polycrisis results in a nesting of anxieties and stresses, creating a temporal experience of always moving too fast to think, but paradoxically staying in the same place. Indeed, the lack of time to think through our interrelated crises causes many to explain away the stressors and deny the very existence of polycrisis. The refusal to engage with crisis forecloses the possibility of critique. As deeply personal experiences, crises often leave the individual speechless, gasping for air or unable to face what has happened or what is yet to come. Crises may thereby temporarily paralyse and lay bare the search for a new language and relationality. It is in the spirit of the despairing and hopeful dynamics and associations that are evoked by our current polycrisis that we propose The Association for Psychosocial Studies 2025 conference. It is our aim to create a space where we can come together, slow down, and collectively think through this complex web of crises. With crisis comes the opportunity to create new lines of alliance and new groups. We want to collectively create a space that can account for, hold and analyse the reparative as well as damaging qualities of the present and the future. |
