Two trainee psychodynamic therapists, also trained actors, offer their visceral and theatrical response to Freud’s seminal paper, published in 1917. They explore how ‘Mourning and Melancholia’ relates to grief and depression, linking the development of these ideas to what was happening in Freud’s life at the time of writing and what is happening in clinical practice today. They will enact an explanation of these concepts and will illustrate how they feed into art and writing, with moving extracts from modern literature. The talk will also include personal reflection and an overview of the enduring importance of Freud’s paper to the helping professions.
