This workshop explores key aspects of man-made human suffering from a psychoanalytic, group-analytic and group attachment standpoint. It argues that, when unresolved trauma remains untreated, it is a fuel for vicious cycles of hatred, terror and destruction, as in the intractable Israel-Palestine conflict. With a diversity of presentations, as well as experiential small and large groups, delegates might reflect on the Jewish Holocaust and the Palestinian Nakba, and their tragic reverberations today.

A clinical case study of an older woman (Margaret, a Holocaust survivor) is presented. She struggled with her unresolved trauma and, after a suicide attempt, benefited from combined individual and group psychotherapy, to be able to come to terms with her traumatic past.

The aim of the workshop is to encourage working harder for peace, endeavouring a deeper understanding of unconscious individual and group psychological defence mechanisms, as well as their sociopolitical context.
