Extra Info | : | Speaker: Jeanine Connor An exploration of the myriad challenges that face young people and how we might support them best in our work. This one-day workshop will focus on young people aged 11 to 16 and will be delivered in two halves. The first half will take a theoretical approach, to examine the transitional and transformational life stage of adolescence. We will outline key themes of physiological (biological) and psychological (cognitive and emotional) development, with a focus on the impact on young people’s evolving identity. This will draw on attachment, developmental and evolutionary theories. We will go on to consider the influence of social and familial networks, including social media, on young people’s developing sense of self and relationships, encouraging a truly holistic approach as well as a curiosity about what it is like to be a young person today. In the second half, we will shift our attention to working therapeutically with young people aged 11 to 16. We will explore the joys and challenges of being an adolescent and being with an adolescent and how these joys and challenges can show up in the therapy room. The trainer will present fictional case studies to illustrate key themes with a keen awareness on holding risk, which is a thread which runs throughout therapeutic work with this age group. There will also be an opportunity to acknowledge personal and societal biases and assumptions about young people and how to manage these in therapeutic practice. |
