This three-hour, evening seminar offers a chance for practitioners to look at several key aspects of working effectively with adult male survivors. It will be suitable for colleagues at any level of experience, and will be in three parts, with short breaks.

The first part of the workshop will focus on an overview of important aspects of the male survivor experience that it is important for therapists to be aware of. These include an awareness of common presenting issues and symptoms, and an understanding that this client group is at a significantly increased risk of suicide. There will also be input on some collective-cultural reasons why the sexual violation of males is an issue that is so often hidden/invisible, and the consequences of this for individuals, and for our wider society.

In the second part there will be a presentation of some fictionalised case material to support an exploration of the complex and often extremely uncomfortable countertransference feelings that are present in the work. There will be an exploration of how therapists might make useful meaning of these responses and navigate them in ways that can actively foster an effective therapeutic alliance with a male survivor. There will be an opportunity to discuss the case material in small groups via breakout rooms.

The third part of the workshop will use a powerful story from Greek mythology as a way to help participants use their imagination to enhance the ability to attune to the inner world of the male survivor, and thereby grow capacity to bear with and be present to the pain, shame and anger of this client group.

There will also be space given to exploring how this myth also points a way to stay connected to some vital hope – for individual male survivors and for our collective. The myth is a means to poignantly illustrate the individual and collective healing which is possible when people can be supported to acknowledge, grieve and accept the trauma of the sexual violation of men and boys.
