Extra Info | : | Why Psychoanalytic Energy Psychotherapy? Working at the 'proto-mental' system level of functioning for deeper resolution With Ruthie Smith and Phil Mollon A psychoanalytic approach aligned with modern understandings of trauma's impact on the container-contained function benefits from integrating adjunctive trauma-focused modalities. Psychoanalytic Energy psychotherapy reveals complexities maintaining psychopathology that conventional talk therapies may not easily access. Clients prone to fragmentation and chaotic states present significant therapeutic challenges. Early developmental trauma and relational ruptures often lead to disorganised communications and behaviours, including fragmented ego states, dissociation, and blurred boundaries between fantasy and reality. Trauma can distort time and memory, causing clients to struggle with 'knowing' or 'not knowing' their experiences. Disorganised attachment patterns may further entrench unhelpful dynamics, such as unconscious retaliatory defenses and punitive control. Wilfred Bion's concept of the proto-mental system offers a framework for understanding these phenomena. This system represents an undifferentiated matrix where physical and mental experiences are initially intertwined before evolving into distinct phenomena. Manifestations like illnesses, accidents, or verbal expressions are considered communications from this foundational level. Psychoanalytic Energy Psychotherapy operates within this realm, integrating psychoanalytic principles with energy psychology techniques to address issues arising from the mind-body interface. Our speakers emphasize that psychological conflicts and traumas are encoded as information within the body's energy system, existing at the interface of psyche and soma. By concurrently addressing these realms, the work creates a powerful therapeutic synergy that facilitates rapid and deep shifts in the individual's well-being. Incorporating energy psychotherapy techniques enables therapists to help clients release traumatic stress through their bodies, minds, and subtle energy systems. These self-applied methods, woven into therapeutic dialogue, regulate distress and develop safety and balance. By strengthening the fragmented ego and integrating dissociated parts, clients can regulate extreme moods and develop a coherent self-narrative. Releasing blocked energy from traumatised states allows clients to reverse self-sabotaging behaviors, promoting mutual, reciprocal relationships. |
