Based on work in the anxiety-provoking and emotional environment of professional football, this book explores the effect that emotions have on the relationships and relatedness of team members; and, the struggles experienced in controlling and managing emotions by leaders and managers of teams. More specifically, this book explores the conflicts associated with the process of managing the boundary between what is inside and what is outside: between what is in the manager's mind and what is happening in the external environment.

Reviews and Endorsements

'Anyone interested in the psychodynamics of leadership and what it takes to lead competitive teams effectively will benefit from reading this book. Lionel Stapley has constructed an articulate framework for understanding the emotional challenges leaders face in the passionate world of football. His observations and lessons for future leaders and consultants are rooted in experience and what Daniel Goleman calls "emotional intelligence". If you are interested in learning about the world of psychodynamically oriented consultancy and coaching, this book is for you.'
- Professor Michael A. Diamond, Director, Center for the Study of Organizational Change, University of Missouri.

'…a meaningful attempt to deepen emotional aspects of team life and performance integrating both psychological and organisational issues.'
- Professor Gilles Amado, HEC Groupe, France

'The author recognises that sport is now big business where the management and workforce (the players) need to motivate and be motivated. Anyone who aspires to management or coaching in any field of sport will surely find ideas and inspiration within the covers of It's an Emotional Game.'
- B.E. Baister, Rugby Football Union Chairman 1998-2001
