The Spirit of the Drive is grippingly written and takes the reader on an intricate journey. Indeed, the subject matter presented so seemingly effortlessly is complex and it contains much material in terms of neurobiology and psychoanalytic theories. This is cleverly done because it requires a great deal of knowledge, thought and experience. The notes are thorough and very comprehensive. I find this book engaging and stimulating. It is thought-provoking and it is both instructive and informative.

The author manages to bring together different psychoanalytic schools of thought with neuroscience as a backbone. The book is rooted in a lifetime of psychoanalytic practice and publishing. It is written in a lucid, at times poetic language. Amazingly original and enriching!

It is a very enjoyable and elucidating introduction to (especially Mark Solms' and Ariane Bazan's) neuropsychoanalysis. Neuroscientific findings and their clinical implications for psychoanalytic practice are made convincingly clear. The drive, Lacanian jouissance and repetitive phenomena come to live. The interludes provide an entertaining and illustrative read and they aereate the complex subject matter. For once the various endorsements are proven right.
